Petra is a picturesque town in the central region known as Pla de Mallorca. It has just under three thousand inhabitants and is a wonderful destination for a vacation in the countryside. The city is famous for being the birthplace of the Franciscan friar and missionary Fray Junípero Serra, considered the founder of California. There are several tourist attractions related to this historical figure. The well-kept streets of this traditional town are a pleasure to explore and the surrounding natural landscape is ideal for hiking and cycling. Petra benefits from a train connection with Palma and Manacor.

Shopping in Petra:

Petra is a place to stock up on local products. On Wednesday mornings there is a weekly market between 8am and 2pm on Carrer de l’Hospital. In addition to fresh fruit and vegetables, you will find the traditional sobrasada, cured cheeses and nuts. For a wine tasting, visit the Galmes i Ferrer Winery, for a tour of an attractive 19th-century winery, book in advance at Vins Miquel Oliver.

There is a bicycle clothing and bicycle repair shop, real estate agencies and basic services such as supermarkets and pharmacies. Fashion stores are less plentiful and shopaholics are better off heading to Manacor.

Top Attractions in Petra:

There are a number of important historic buildings in Petra, such as the Gothic church of Sant Pere, the convent of Sant Bernardí and the mid-20th century former school, Escoles Velles. The Fray Junípero Serra House and Museum, located along a beautifully preserved flagstone street, are also among the top attractions.

The two main squares, the Plaza de Beat Ramón Llull and the Plaza de Fra Juníper Serra, are a focal point for restaurants and cafes. For wonderful views of the surrounding plains, walk to the Hermitage of Bonany on the outskirts of the city. The original chapel was built in the 17th century, however the current reconstruction dates back to the 20th century.

Things to do in Petra:

If you love old doors, a walk through the city will provide you with many uplifting impressions. On the oldest streets, neighbors convey a certain pride in their home with abundant flower pots. To visit the main attractions, it is best to get there early. The Fray Junípero Serra Museum opens Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. After a city tour, enjoy a coffee or meal next to the undulating fountain in Plaza de Beat Ramon Llull.

There are various hiking and cycling routes in the area. A popular walk is the 2-hour round trip to the Hermitage of Bonany at the top of Puig de Bonany. As for cycling, the picturesque back roads allow adventurous visitors to travel through the countryside and explore neighboring towns and villages, without the inconvenience of excess traffic.

Restaurants in Petra:

In Petra there is a mix of casual cafes, laid-back local bars and charming restaurants. Around the pleasant main squares of the city there are numerous restaurants. To enjoy local cuisine, head to Es Celler, which captures traditional Mallorca with its agricultural souvenirs and vaulted sandstone ceilings.

Can Salom serves fresh, colorful dishes made with seasonal produce. Charcoal grilled meat and a beautifully secret garden are just two reasons to visit C’an Oms. For wood-fired pizza, there is Trattoria La Bicetta in the Plaza de Beat Ramón Llull.
